This is a follow up to my last blogpost Mr Kafranbel Comes To Washington
Last week was a very big one for Syria opposition propagandist Raed Fares. He was involved in two very high profile events in Washington the sole purpose of which was to raise more money for his propaganda operation back in Kafranbel, Syria. One was a meeting with Congressman Ed Royce, Chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee and the other was an appearance at the Washington think tank The Atlantic Council.
But if his mission was to succeed he could not be truthful about his allegiance to Ahrar al-Sham, an Al-Qaeda style Jihadist faction that is very closely tied to Jabhat al-Nusra. The two groups make up the bulk of Jaish al-Fateh, the alliance which “liberated” Idlib earlier this year. Their ideologies are very similar and both have as their main goal a Syria that is ruled by Sharia law.
First, there is his relationship with Hadi al-Abdallah, a propagandist for both of these terrorist groups. Al-Abdallah visits Kafranbel very frequently and makes it a point to appear in as many of the banner photos as he possibly can. Then there are Fares’ own tweets and retweets which reveal a lot. Here are some tweets and pictures that are of interest:
At Atlantic Council, Raed Fares was introduced by Hilary Clinton’s former advisor on Syria, Ambassador Frederic Hof. Not only did he leave out the fact he supports terrorist groups in Syria, he went the extra mile and launched an attack on all the Islamist groups saying that he and his townspeople hated them. How could he think he would get away with it knowing that there is a trail of evidence to the contrary on his own twitter account. The man is either completely stupid or he thinks everyone else is. Here is some of what he said:
“In the weeks that followed the “liberation” of Idlib city and Jisr al-Shoghour by the armed groups, people reluctantly accepted or even sympathized with the Islamist groups. But after a while the people started to see violations committed with respect to their dignity by the radical groups and we as civil society continued to push our messages and now have reached a point where people hate the Assad regime and everyone who backs it, they hate ISIS and everyone who backs it, they hate Al-Qaeda and everyone who backs it and they have gotten to a point where they hate Islamists in general to a point that they now have an aversion to people with long beards.”
The point of this whole exercise was to try and bamboozle the Americans into granting him more money beyond the two million dollars he has already received from them. Hopefully the people in Washington will not fall for this deception. Imagine that a publication like the Washington Post actually gave this conman Op/Ed space. I would have thought they would do a more thorough investigation of someone before they do such a thing. Finally, one has to wonder if as a result of what he said about the Islamists he can ever go back to Idlib as they will certainly not take what he said lightly.
